Prelude 12/21

This is what I brought you This you can keep This is what I brought You may forget me I promise to depart just promise one thing Kiss my eyes And lay me to sleep This is what I brought you This you can keep This is what I brought You may forget me I promise you my heart Just promise to sing Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep. Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep. This is what I thought I thought you'd need me This is what I thought So think me naive I'd promise you a heart You'd promise to keep Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.

12/21 is the date of the winter solstice for 2006. I felt that this shows that the cd is the beginning of the winter, or a winter theme for the album. A sort of cold, disillusioned feeling as quoted by Davey Havok about the new album, "decemberunderground is a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation. It is a community of those detached and disillusioned who flee to love, like winter, in the recesses below the rest of the world."
I can't really decipher the meaning to the song to well without looking at the entire scope of the album. But what I feel is that it is sort of a message from Davey to the listener.
"This is what I brought you this you can keep" I think this is a referring the songs or the cd itself.
"This is what I brought you may forget me" Might be referring to the fans of the band as they may grow apart from AFI or move on. But he doesn't want them go without a goodbye.
The last section of lyrics: This is what I thought, I thought you'd need me
This is what I thought, so think me naive
I'd promise you a heart, you'd promise to keep
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep Kiss my eyes and lay me to... sleep.
This seems though that it's more personal. Maybe to a particular person who left Davey feeling abandoned. Though it could still easily be the fanbase or to the listener personally.
In total, the album starts with prelude 12/21 as the start of a cold hopeless goodbye. Sort of a, think of me every once in a while. A message to the listener I feel, but hopefully not a goodbye forever (I want another album!)
