Porphyria Cutanea Tarda

I know.…. It's here we retreat, for where else could we go? To great disbelief there is somewhere we belong. In negative space supposed flaws go unseen, but our strength is shown. In darkness together we're bringing the light. In darkness together we are forming. The fire tomorrow is born of the night, in darkness together we ignite. From all we've been shunned but we found a new home. To great discontent it is greatness that we own. In luminous eyes, reflections of fear absolute... All hate what we've become. In darkness together we're bringing the light. In darkness together we are forming. The fire tomorrow is born of the night, in darkness together we ignite. Through our will we bring fear. Left to burn beneath the sun. We are one. When daylight forms blinding walls where do we go? Days arid are scorching all. When daylight forms blinding, binding walls where do we go? The darkness calls.

To start off, it is important to know what Porphyria is. Porphyria is a skin disease where sufferers have extremely sensitive skin and bright sunshine is extremely bad for them. This is very important as it sets the tone for the song and themes that run throughout the album. A bit like the children in the film 'The Others' I imagine. In Dave’s lyrics there are a number of themes which he constantly refers back to. I think Porphyria has a similar content to a number of other AFI songs such as; ‘File 13’ or ‘Keeping out of Direct Sunlight’. Daves commenting in these songs about how he is lacking a sense of belonging in his life and how he doesn’t fit in.
Porphyria, however has a more positive, uplifting theme. Davey is saying that he has found solace by being with like-minded people. He uses the Porphyria suffers to represent possibly the punk/hardcore scene or his close friends.
“ From all we’ve been shunned but we’ve found a new home”
“To great disbelief there is somewhere we belong”
The chorus has the line “In darkness together we’re bringing the light”. I believe this means that when there is a feeling of unity, it is as good to Davey as being popular or fitting in. The idea is that the Porphyria sufferers no longer need the sunshine because they feel happy in the darkness.
There are also interesting binary opposites carefully put into the song by Dave. Darkness and light is the main one. Dark being symbolic of imperfection whereas Light (Religion?) being unachievable perfection and Davey feels happy that he can admit that he’s not perfect.

hey STEEEVE, I read your interpretation of "porphyria" and I agree with it sort of...but I have one of my own. let me know what you think...
Porphyria Cutanea Tarda:
I believe this song is trying to tell us all not to judge or assume something about someone by their appearance. This song has made me LOVE the darkness and the night time, because although it is used as metaphor, the fact remains that in darkness our outward differences melt away and we are one as human beings together in the shadows....
I know... It's here we retreat, for where else could we go?:
society has rejected us, HERE is the only place where we can be a part of life without being mocked, tortured, injured....looked down upon and broken
To great disbelief there is somewhere we belong:
those who ridiculed us would never think we'd unite and find a place of our own
In negative space supposed flaws go unseen, but our strength is shown:
when you look into the darkness, you can make out figures, but no details. if you see any detail at all you are seeing what you WANT to see or BELIEVE is there by what you feel and what you hear. Someone's flawed outer appearence (obesity, scarring, mutilation or deformation) is invisible and you see them for what they are in their speech and actions. Their beauty shows
In darkness together we're bringing the light:
the darkness extinguishes our biased opinions about people and shows up their "light" - what they really are.
In darkness together we are forming:
The light shows how different we all are. so we choose to come together in the darkness
The fire tomorrow is born of the night, in darkness together we ignite:
When we no longer judge by looks - when we're blind of race and outward appearance we will find the truth - the "fire" - and we're igniting the first spark of the fire of truth HERE in the darkness. That fire is not lit for our eyes, but for our hearts.
From all we've been shunned but we found a new home:
we're hated for how we look. We've found comfort in the dark
To great discontent it is greatness that we own:
people are starting to hear about our life in the darkness and are jealous and nervous of this utopia we've found.
In luminous eyes, reflections of fear absolute... All hate what we've become:
the people who dwell under the sun in the light are scared to death of the truth we've found - they're blinded by what they see, afraid of what they can't see, and hate us for the clarity we've found
Through our will we bring fear. Left to burn beneath the sun:
let all of those who are still seeing with their eyes instead of their hearts burn with that biased light that shows our differences and devides us all We are one: we don't worry about them. none of us can tell in the dark who is "better" than who...we are truly one
When daylight forms blinding walls where do we go? the darkness calls: when people see what we look like, they are blinded by our appearance. They hate us. We need a place to go...the darkness
Days arid are scorching all. Where do we go? the darkness calls: the light and the people blinded by appearance hurt us...let's go to the darkness
When daylight forms blinding, binding walls where do we go? The darkness calls: the darkness is calling me. it's where I belong. Out of the light and the cruel eyes of the biased

There's a poem by Robert Browning called Porphyria's Lover. The woman, Porphyria, cheats on her husband, but he doesn't want her to leave him, so he strangles her with her hair so she will eternally be at his side.
