God Called In Sick Today

Let's admire the pattern forming. Murderous filigree. I'm caught in the twisting of the vine. Go ascend with ivy, climbing. Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind. I can't help my laughter as she cries. My soul brings tears to angelic eyes. Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully, I'll let animosity unwind. Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully. I'll still feel the violence of the lines. I can't stand my laughter as they cry. My soul brings tears to angelic eyes. And miles away my mother cries. Omnipotence, nurturing malevolence.

I think this song is about how Davey has done something horrible to the people (or just one person) that he cares for and he is really angry at himself for doing so, yet part of him says it is good that he did it "I can't help my laughter as she cries" "I can't stand my laughter as they cry"

I like your Interpretation of God Called In Sick Today but heres my view try this go look up all the words then sit in a dark room turn up this song loudand just relax... the only thing I can come up with is the song is about... A Beautiful Suicide

i think he is stating the beginning of the song that doing harm to others is natural and how most people just do it and think nothing of it. maybe he is questioning wether he should care. "lets admire the pattern forming. murdurous filigree." "i'm caught in the twisting of the vine" this could be him questiong wether he should care, or that he just feels wrapped up in all of it. "ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind." here i think he is saying that there is no hope for him, so it seems that he does feel that he is caught up doing harm to others. "i cant help my laughter..." its obvious that he has fallen into natural human mistakes in that people do harm to others and dont care about others who are suffering. the fact that he admits that "i cant stand my laughter as she cries" is saying how he doesnt like this quality. " lets amend the classic story, close it so beautifuly. steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefuly." here it seems that he is saying how people have just ignored this quality about humans, the lack of compasion, and just show no sign of remorse for all the atrosities performed. the fact that he states that "I'll still feel the violence of the lines." is saying that he cant just ignore what he has done or what has been done in the past. he will feel what he has done no matter what. he cant ignore these bad qualities that most humans have like others can just forget. thus he has been cursed with this disease, for lack of a better word, which is where the title plays a part. "god called in sick today" he has not been blessed with the ability to just forget the bad things he has done like others can.

I think That stephen is correct but I would like to add my own ideas. I think that the title "god called in sick today" sets the theme for the song, that people are evil and that god calling in sick caused this. The last line "omnipotence, nurturing malevolence" means a great power, (omnipotence) nurturing evil, (malevolence). The great power is the lack of god, or the natural instinct of humans. This power is the reason for evil on earth which causes our shame.

this song is in fact about how davey got in a fight with his mother about Christian religion. "my soul brings tears to angelic eyes" "miles away my mother cries". Just thought I would let you know..

Let's admire the pattern forming
The narrator (Davey) sees now that something is happening or about to happen, as I see it, he is realizing he is bisexual.
Murderous filigree
In the dictionary, a filigree is described as "fine ornamental work", so Davey is trying to say that something is dangerously beautiful.
I'm caught in the twisting of the vine
Davey is now trapped in the aforementioned "pattern", so he finally came to the realization that, yes, he DOES like men.
Go ascend with ivy, climbing
Davey is telling everyone to come along for the ride ("C'mon, guys!!! We can all be gay together!!!")
Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind
He's saying to ignore everything bad that has been said in the past.
Can't help my laughter as she cries
He feels good about being like he is, even though everyone around him is disappointed in him.
My soul brings tears to angelic eyes
His being bisexual made his mother (see lower... ya know) cry
Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully
The "classic story" is the prejudice that goes along homo/bisexuality, and since Davey is amending, or changing, it, he's basically saying that he's going to make everyone see the issue in a different light
I'll let animosity unwind
The animosity symbolizes the crimes that have happened against gays and bis, and Davey's letting it happen.
Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully
We're talking again of this "classic story", and Davey hides the bad things that people are now saying, and he's ashamed
I'll still feel the violence of the lines
He regrets coming out of the closet, because people are prejudiced against him now
I can't help my laughter as they cry
He hates the fact that everyone is disappointed in him, and he wishes he could take it back
My soul brings tears to angelic eyes
See previous...
And miles away my mother cries
Note to Davey: "SHE'S YOUR MOM!!!!! WHY HURT HER LIKE THAT????"
Omnipotence, nurturing malevolence
In the dictionary, omnipotence means "having absolute power" or "all-knowing", and malevolence is described as "wishing evil to others"... use your imagination...

Umm... so like yeah. This was my interpretation of God Called In Sick Today: I think that the title says a lot. In my opinion, this song is from the point of view of God, or Jesus, or some higher power. The people are suffering and all God/Jesus can do is laugh. 'Miles away my mother cries' could mean Mary. It's all religious symbolism. 'Omnipotence' - God is the only thing omnipotent. It all sort of links in with Davey's atheism.

Some say its about davey letting people down about stuff (some say he let people down by being gay with no one could prove hes gay) .....some say its about a dead guy who pulled himself out of the grave left his headstone crumbling behind stole his old girlfriend and re wrote the classic love story and miles away his mother crys thinking he is still dead.
I think its about being different and people make fun of him so when these people that bother him get hurt he laughs and it hurts his mother and I guess others because his reaction to there pain ..The joy he gets is dementing and wrong but he finds it so funny...the classic story mentioned mean how everyone's the same..the vines the way they pull you in and he rewrites stuff by being different.....im guilty for all this stuff and I find this true...and if davey says different that's still what I think...because I relate to it.
The title comes from " god called in sick when he gave him a conscience or god called in sick when he let people bothers davey"

I believe it is talking about how "god" has let him down, every time he needs help, he feels "God Called in Sick" and wasn't there for him.
