Catch a Hot One

Let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anybody likes the tone or the pain. The hungry eyes waiting for life flash, now they're gonna see it. Open your veins so we can make a pool and bathe and see if anyone complains of the stain. Let's strip you down so we can see you old scars. Now you're gonna feel it. Show me how to shine now. Have you ever turned to dust? I saw an insect learn to fly; its form was scorned. Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys? I saw it stay in sovereignty. Have you lost the sense of touch? Have you ever turned to dust? Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you fall. We always thought that you could fly; now you'll crawl. The lack of loyalty you thought you once felt, now you're gonna feel it. Now show me how to shine.

Catch a hot one may sound familiar because it has a very similar theme to other AFI songs especially Lower it, albeit with more lavish imagery. ‘the name you once honoured you disgraced’ – (Lower it) and ‘the lack of loyalty you thought you once felt’ – this song. This is a chance for Dave to display his anger for someone he feels has let him down.

I believe this song to be directed towards the people that don't understand how he is the way he is..that he is yelling at these people saying "let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anyone likes the tone or the pain" and meaning "How do you think you would feel if i broke your heart and threw every gut wrenching emotion right back in your face for other people to continually pick apart." The chorus about the insect is him, looking at himself saying that he thinks that although he is in a higher position than he used to be, he is still keeping to himself, and being himself. "let's lift you up so we can see how fast you'll fall" i think he's saying "Let's pump your head full of all these beautiful images and serene thoughts and tear through them, leaving heartache and suffering in the path and see how you feel" "show me how to shine" is saying "now that i've ripped you apart and left you with nothing, show me how to dig my way out..show me how i can regain my stature"

I'm getting a headache thinking of this, so you can elaborate on my notes if you want, or whatever. I'm having trouble figuring out whether or not davey is speaking to a critic, or if he's speaking as a critic about himself, or even speaking as someone else. I've convinced myself that my translation of the lyrics are correct though. ***

lets see you pour out your heart and soul in the form of songs/music and see if anyone likes it.***
Show me how to shine now
.***Show me how to be a star.***
I saw an insect learn to fly; its form was scorned. Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys? I saw it stay in sovereignty.
***Oddly enough, here I think the insect is supposed to be an underground artist. Learning to fly is supposed to be your ticket to the big time, the spotlight if you will, or mainstream. The kingdom of the flys would therefore be the mainstream. The artist (insect) stayed in mainstream (sovereignty).
***Have you lost the sense of touch?
***Have you fallen out of touch with the underground?

Greetings. Here's my interpretation of CATCH A HOT ONE:
I think this song may have been written to criticize the way some people find refuge in seeing the world from an arrogant point of view to somehow disguise their true selves and maybe have forgotten their true insignificance in this world, being incapable of feeling amazed by anything again.

The song begins by destroying this "armour" of arrogance by uncovering humanity's nature (heart & blood) and showing the lack of importance of pain/death/absence in this world: "Let's tap your heart so we can paint the walls and see if anybody likes the tone or the pain." Open your veins so we can make a pool and bathe and see if anyone complains of the stain. "

After that "armour" for feelings is pierced he becomes sensible again and he's not able to hide it anymore: "Let's strip you down so we can see you old scars. Now you're gonna feel it. Show me how to shine now."

"Have you ever turned to dust? I saw an insect learn to fly; its form was scorned. Have you ever seen the kingdom of the flys? I saw it stay in sovereignty." We must learn to be humble (Ashes to ashes dust to dust). Davey seems to be amazed of life's beauty (even inside something so small and often disrespected as an insect), and tells us how our arrogance sometimes doesn't allow us to notice such great power and beauty.

"Have you lost the sense of touch?" Have you lost your sensibility?

"Let's lift you up so we can see how fast you fall. We always thought that you could fly; now you'll crawl." You always thought you were godlike but now it's time to show how pathetic you really are.

"The lack of loyalty you thought you once felt, now you're gonna feel it. Now show me how to shine." You always thought you were unattached to everything, now you'll truly feel it and I'll be watching all of it.
